Neeraj Chauhan Wins Recurve Bronze After Defeating Dhiraj Bommadevara at Asian Games
Indian archer Neeraj Chauhan won the bronze medal in the men’s individual recurve event at the 2026 Asian Games on Saturday, October 3, defeating compatriot Dhiraj Bommadevara 6-4 in an all-Indian medal contest in Okazaki, Japan.
Chauhan Completes Comeback
The bronze-medal match was closely contested from the opening set.
Chauhan won the first set 29-26 to take an early 2-0 lead. Bommadevara responded in the second set, winning it 28-27 to level the match at 2-2.
Bommadevara then moved ahead after taking the third set 29-28, putting Chauhan 2-4 down in the set-score format.
Chauhan responded strongly in the fourth set, shooting a perfect 30 to win it 30-28 and bring the match level at 4-4.
Deciding Set Goes to Chauhan
With the bronze medal decided by the fifth set, Chauhan produced another composed performance.
He scored 29, including two X-ring shots, while Bommadevara managed 28. Chauhan therefore won the deciding set 2-0 and completed a 6-4 victory.
Historic Individual Recurve Medal for India
The bronze ended India's 16-year wait for a men's individual recurve medal at the Asian Games.
Chauhan became only the second Indian male archer to win an individual recurve medal at the Games, after Tarundeep Rai won silver at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games.
The result also gave India a podium finish across all five recurve events at the Aichi-Nagoya Games.
India’s Strong Archery Campaign
Chauhan's bronze came during a highly successful Asian Games campaign for Indian archery.
India had already secured several medals across the recurve and compound competitions, including gold in the women's individual recurve event for Kumkum Mohod on the same day.
Chauhan and Bommadevara had also been teammates in the men's team competition, where India won silver before meeting each other in the individual bronze-medal match.
Why It Matters
Chauhan's medal adds another podium finish to India's strong archery campaign and marks India's return to the men's individual recurve Asian Games podium after 16 years.
TVR Perspective
The all-Indian bronze-medal match made the result particularly significant for India: regardless of the outcome, an Indian archer was guaranteed a medal. Chauhan's recovery from 2-4 down and his performance in the final two sets ultimately secured the bronze.
