Quimcy Dsouza Loses Teqball Semifinal, Bronze Medal Still Within Reach at Asian Games 2026
India’s Quimcy Joaquim Dsouza missed out on a place in the women’s singles Teqball final at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, losing a closely contested semifinal to Indonesia’s Ima Sumaya on Saturday, September 19.
However, Dsouza’s campaign is not over. She will now compete in the bronze-medal match on Sunday, keeping India’s chance of winning its first-ever Asian Games Teqball medal alive.
Dsouza Takes the Lead, But Sumaya Fights Back
The Indian started strongly at the Nagoya City Higashi Sports Center, winning the opening set 12-7 and moving ahead in the semifinal.
Sumaya responded in the second set, winning 12-9 to level the match. The Indonesian then completed the comeback by taking the deciding set 12-7, securing her place in the final.
The result ended Dsouza’s hopes of reaching the gold-medal match, but she remains in contention for a podium finish.
Bronze Medal Still Possible
As a losing semifinalist, Dsouza moves directly into the bronze-medal playoff.
There has been some conflicting reporting about her opponent in early reports. Multiple later reports identify Japan’s Yuina Sakamoto as her bronze-medal opponent, while an earlier India Today report listed Cambodia’s Koemyean Dy. The more recent reports from NDTV, Times of India and other outlets identify Sakamoto.
The bronze-medal match is scheduled for Sunday, September 20.
A victory would give Dsouza and India a historic first Asian Games Teqball medal, with the sport making its Asian Games debut at Aichi-Nagoya 2026.
A Breakthrough Asian Games Debut
The 24-year-old had already produced a notable run before reaching the semifinals.
In her opening Group A match, Dsouza defeated Japan’s top-seeded Sakamoto 2-1, recovering from a 10-12 opening-set loss to win the next two sets 12-11 and 13-11.
She then defeated Cambodia’s Koemyean Dy 12-9, 12-7 to finish top of her group and earn a direct place in the semifinals.
Teqball Makes Its Asian Games Debut
Teqball is among the sports making its debut at the 2026 Asian Games. The football-based sport is played on a curved table and combines football skills with elements that resemble other net and table sports.
For India, Dsouza's run has brought significant attention to a sport that has a relatively small competitive base in the country.
TVR Perspective
TVR Perspective: Dsouza’s semifinal defeat closes one route to the podium, but not the medal opportunity itself. Her run has already put Teqball in the spotlight for Indian sports audiences, and Sunday’s bronze-medal match now carries the possibility of a historic first Asian Games medal for India in the sport.
Sources & Verification
This report was prepared using current reporting from NDTV, Times of India, India Today and Indian Express, cross-checking the semifinal result, score and remaining medal opportunity. Reports differed on the bronze opponent at different points of the day; later reports consistently identified Japan’s Yuina Sakamoto.
