India's campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games has suffered a major blow after two separate anti-doping-related developments impacted the national contingent ahead of competition.
The first setback came when judoka Arun Kumar was withdrawn from the Games after receiving a provisional suspension following an adverse analytical finding in an out-of-competition doping test. The withdrawal leaves India without a replacement in the men's 73kg judo event due to Commonwealth Games entry regulations.
Soon after, Indian weightlifting also faced a significant setback. The country's athlete quota for the Commonwealth Games was reduced because of multiple Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) recorded during the qualification period.
As a result of the reduced quota, weightlifter Dilbagh Singh was withdrawn from India's squad despite not being accused of any personal doping violation. The decision was made after India's maximum weightlifting entries were cut, forcing officials to trim the team.
The twin setbacks have reduced India's overall contingent and dealt a blow to the country's medal hopes in both judo and weightlifting.
Despite the sanction, Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu continues to lead India's weightlifting campaign and remains one of the country's strongest medal contenders.
The incidents have once again highlighted the importance of maintaining strict anti-doping compliance across all sports, with repeated violations carrying consequences not only for individual athletes but also for entire national teams.
Indian officials are expected to continue cooperating with anti-doping authorities while focusing on ensuring the remaining athletes can compete without further disruption during the Games.
