Shubman Gill’s Special 200: India Captain Smashes Fastest ODI Double Century
Shubman Gill produced a historic innings against the West Indies in the second ODI in Guwahati, scoring an unbeaten 223 off 133 balls as India chased down 406. Gill reached his double century from just 117 balls, making it the fastest double century in men’s ODI cricket.
Gill Reaches 200 in Just 117 Balls
Gill's double century came during India's record chase at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.
He reached 200 from 117 deliveries, surpassing Ishan Kishan's previous record of 126 balls for an ODI double century. Gill eventually finished on 223 not out, having struck 26 fours and eight sixes.
The innings was particularly significant because Gill achieved the milestone while chasing a target of more than 400 runs.
Only the Second Batter With Multiple ODI Double Hundreds
The 223 was Gill's second ODI double century.
His first came against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2023, when he scored 208. With his latest innings, Gill became only the second batter after Rohit Sharma to record multiple double centuries in men's ODI cricket. Rohit has three.
Record-Breaking Partnership With Rohit Sharma
Gill was supported by Rohit Sharma during India's chase.
The pair added 255 runs for the opening wicket, India's highest opening partnership in a home ODI. Rohit scored 101 from 75 balls before being dismissed.
Gill continued after Rohit's departure and guided India through the remainder of the chase.
India Complete a 406-Run Chase
West Indies had posted 405/7, with centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo.
India reached the target in 43.3 overs, winning by eight wickets. It was the second-highest successful chase in ODI history.
Gill's 223 was therefore not simply an individual milestone—it came in the middle of one of India's biggest successful ODI run chases.
Why It Matters
Gill's innings combined several major ODI milestones: the fastest men's ODI double century, his second 200-plus score, and a major contribution to India's successful 406-run chase. He also became the second batter after Rohit Sharma to register multiple ODI double centuries.
TVR Perspective
Gill's 223 stands out because of the circumstances as much as the numbers. Facing a target of 406, he accelerated from a century to a double century at extraordinary speed and remained unbeaten through the chase, turning an already remarkable match into a record-setting performance.
