India Celebrates Gandhi Jayanti 2026 as Nation Pays Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi
India is observing Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, 2026, marking the 157th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, one of the central figures of India’s freedom movement. Tributes and commemorative programmes are being held across the country, with ceremonies focusing on Gandhi’s principles of truth, non-violence, peace and public service.
Tributes at Rajghat
President Droupadi Murmu paid floral tributes at Mahatma Gandhi’s samadhi at Rajghat in New Delhi on October 2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid homage at Rajghat and attended a prayer meeting at Gandhi Smriti.
The government’s official programme also included tributes to Gandhi at several institutions and public locations across the country.
Gandhi’s Legacy of Non-Violence
Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat. His philosophy of Satyagraha, based on truth and non-violent resistance, became an important part of India's independence movement.
His campaigns included the Salt March of 1930 and wider movements against British colonial rule. His approach to non-violent resistance also influenced civil-rights movements internationally.
October 2 Is Also International Day of Non-Violence
Gandhi Jayanti has significance beyond India. The United Nations observes October 2 as the International Day of Non-Violence, following a 2007 UN General Assembly resolution recognising the importance of promoting a culture of peace and non-violence.
The date therefore connects India's national commemoration of Gandhi with an international observance centred on non-violence.
Nationwide Programmes
Gandhi Jayanti 2026 is also being marked through community initiatives. Government programmes include cleanliness activities, tree plantation, digital-literacy efforts and other forms of community service.
The Ministry of Panchayati Raj said 2.42 lakh special Gram Sabhas were being held across India on Gandhi Jayanti, bringing local communities together for discussions on citizen-focused governance and development.
Gandhi's Ideas in Contemporary India
Government messages on Gandhi Jayanti have highlighted themes including Swadeshi, self-reliance, cleanliness, service and social harmony.
Prime Minister Modi, in his October 2 message, paid tribute to Gandhi and highlighted his emphasis on Swadeshi and Khadi.
TVR Perspective
Gandhi Jayanti is more than a commemoration of a historical figure. It is also an annual occasion for India to reflect on the principles associated with Gandhi—particularly non-violence, truth, service and social harmony—and how those ideas are interpreted in contemporary public life.
