US Open: Coco Gauff Survives Tough Badosa Test to Reach Third Round

Coco Gauff survived a stern test from Paula Badosa at the US Open, defeating the former world No. 2 6-4, 7-6(7-5) on Thursday to book her place in the third round.

The fourth-seeded American entered the match as the higher-ranked player and one of the tournament's major contenders, but Badosa presented a particularly difficult challenge. The Spaniard had won their previous two meetings, including a victory earlier this year in Berlin.

Gauff withstands Badosa pressure

Playing on Arthur Ashe Stadium, Gauff had to deal with early pressure as Badosa created two break-point opportunities.

The American eventually found the crucial breakthrough and took the opening set 6-4, but the contest remained highly competitive.

The second set became even more intense. Both players exchanged breaks before the set went to a tiebreak. Gauff maintained her composure when it mattered most, eventually closing out the match 7-5 in the tiebreak.

Gauff acknowledged afterwards that Badosa was a particularly difficult second-round opponent and said the match could help build her confidence as the tournament progresses.

A confidence boost after Cincinnati

The victory comes at an important moment for Gauff.

The American arrives in New York with momentum after winning the Cincinnati title, where she defeated Jessica Pegula in the final. Her Cincinnati run included 12 consecutive sets won after dropping the opening set of her first match.

Gauff is also a former US Open champion, having won the title in 2023. Her current form has therefore placed her among the leading contenders for another deep run in New York.

Cristina Bucsa awaits

Gauff's next opponent will be another Spaniard, Cristina Bucsa, in the third round.

The challenge may be different from Badosa's, but Gauff's second-round experience showed that even early matches at a Grand Slam can demand her best tennis.

With the defending champion Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, Iga Swiatek and other leading contenders also competing, the women's draw remains wide open for another major battle in New York.

For Gauff, however, the immediate objective is clear: keep building momentum and move one step closer to another US Open title.
