US Open 2026: Alexander Zverev Survives Another Five-Set Thriller
Alexander Zverev is turning the 2026 US Open into a test of endurance. The top-seeded German survived a second consecutive five-set battle at Flushing Meadows, defeating France’s Quentin Halys 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-7(3), 6-3 in the second round.
The match lasted four hours and 33 minutes inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, coming only days after Zverev had spent nearly five hours overcoming Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in another five-set marathon.
Another Marathon for the Top Seed
Zverev entered the match still recovering from the physical demands of his opening-round encounter with Sonego.
Against Halys, the German again found himself pushed deep into a fifth set. He won the opening set 6-4, but Halys responded by taking the second 6-4.
Zverev then edged the third set in a tiebreak before Halys forced another tiebreak in the fourth and levelled the contest.
The deciding set ultimately belonged to Zverev, who secured a 6-3 victory to complete another marathon win.
Two Five-Setters in a Row
The victory means Zverev has now played back-to-back five-set matches at this year's US Open.
His opening-round match against Sonego was even longer, lasting 4 hours and 52 minutes. Zverev was two points from defeat during that contest before fighting back to win 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(7), 7-5, 6-4.
Across his first two matches, Zverev therefore spent more than nine hours on court, an unusually demanding start for a top seed with ambitions of making a deep Grand Slam run. Reuters noted that his physical resilience remained intact despite the workload.
Zverev Finds a Way Under Pressure
The German did not produce his best tennis throughout the Halys encounter.
The official US Open report noted that Zverev struggled at times with his normally reliable backhand and serve, but he raised his level during the critical moments of the match.
That ability to recover during pressure points has become one of the defining features of his tournament so far.
Rather than allowing Halys to take control after the fourth-set setback, Zverev regrouped and maintained enough consistency to close out the deciding set.
A Different Zverev This Season
Zverev arrived in New York as a Grand Slam champion for the first time.
The German won his maiden major title at Roland Garros earlier in 2026, adding a significant achievement to a career that had previously included a US Open final appearance in 2020.
He also reached the Wimbledon final earlier this season, further strengthening his position among the leading contenders at Flushing Meadows.
The US Open represents another opportunity for Zverev to add a second Grand Slam title to his breakthrough season.
The Reward: A Third-Round Match
After surviving two consecutive five-setters, Zverev advanced to the third round, where he faced 25th seed Alejandro Tabilo.
That match turned out to be a much shorter affair: Zverev defeated Tabilo 6-2, 7-6(2), 6-2 and advanced to the fourth round.
He is now scheduled to face Luciano Darderi in the round of 16.
The Bigger US Open Picture
Zverev's progress comes during an unpredictable men's draw.
Several seeded players have already departed, creating additional opportunities for contenders to move deeper into the tournament. With Zverev continuing to advance, the German is now positioned as one of the major names remaining in his section of the draw.
His early matches, however, have also highlighted the physical demands that come with a Grand Slam campaign.
Two five-set battles followed by a straight-set victory against Tabilo suggest that Zverev has managed to recover from the exhausting opening rounds — at least so far.
From Survival to Contention
For Zverev, the early story of the 2026 US Open has been less about dominant tennis and more about survival, resilience and finding solutions under pressure.
He survived Sonego.
He survived Halys.
And he then dispatched Tabilo in straight sets to reach the last 16.
The challenge now becomes significantly greater as the tournament moves toward its business end.
After finally winning his first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros this year, Zverev is chasing another major prize in New York.
Two five-set thrillers showed his resilience. The next rounds will determine whether that resilience can carry him all the way to another Grand Slam final.
