Shots Fired at Goa Casino Director Srinivas Nayak, Crime Branch Takes Over Probe
Two armed men opened fire at Srinivas Nayak, director of Majestic Pride Group, in Porvorim, Goa, in an apparent targeted attack that left the casino executive unharmed.
The incident took place on the evening of August 28, when Nayak was leaving the Majestic Hotel in Porvorim and heading towards his vehicle.
According to police and reports, the attackers had allegedly been waiting near the premises before opening fire. Nayak's security personnel responded, forcing the assailants to flee.
Three rounds fired at Nayak
Goa Police said three rounds were fired at Nayak.
The casino director escaped without injury, while his security personnel returned fire. Reports indicate that the attackers then fled from the area towards the highway.
Nayak later said he believed the attackers may have studied his movements beforehand.
He told The Indian Express that the men appeared to have been waiting for him and opened fire as he was leaving the office. He also said he had not received any previous threats and did not want to speculate about the motive while the investigation was continuing.
Attack happened close to police station
The location of the shooting has added to concerns surrounding the incident.
The attack occurred in Porvorim, reportedly only a short distance from the local police station and near the State Assembly complex.
The fact that armed attackers were able to allegedly wait for their target and open fire in such a prominent area has triggered questions about security and Goa's law-and-order situation.
Opposition leaders have also criticised the state government over the incident.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said the government would not tolerate such attacks and directed authorities to establish the reason behind the shooting and arrest those responsible.
Crime Branch takes over investigation
Three days after the shooting, the Goa government transferred the investigation to the Crime Branch.
The decision was announced in the Goa Assembly, with the government expressing confidence that the accused would be arrested.
Investigators are examining several possible explanations for the attack.
Police have reportedly ruled out an extortion angle for the time being, while looking into possible business disputes, personal enmity and whether the attack involved contract killers.
Authorities have also been examining whether the alleged shooters came to Goa from outside the state.
CCTV footage becomes key evidence
Investigators are relying heavily on CCTV footage from the area.
Footage reportedly showed two men waiting near the hotel before the shooting. Police have been working to establish their identities and movements before and after the attack.
Police also recovered evidence from the scene, including two live rounds, while investigators determined that a 9mm-calibre weapon was used.
The investigation remains active, and authorities have not publicly established who ordered or carried out the attack.
Nayak escapes unharmed
Despite being targeted at close range, Nayak was not injured.
His security personnel's immediate response appears to have helped disrupt the attack, allowing him to retreat inside the hotel while the assailants escaped.
Nayak subsequently cooperated with investigators and recorded his statement.
In his complaint, he described the incident as a deliberate attempt to kill him, rather than merely an intimidation attempt.
A major security concern for Goa
The shooting has generated wider debate about security in Goa, particularly because the alleged attack took place in a busy part of Porvorim.
Goa is one of India's most important tourism destinations, and the state has a large hospitality and entertainment industry.
The targeting of a prominent casino executive has therefore attracted attention beyond the individual case, particularly over questions surrounding organised crime, business disputes and the security of high-profile business figures.
However, investigators have yet to establish a definitive motive.
Investigation continues
For now, the central questions remain unanswered: Who ordered the attack, who carried it out and why was Nayak targeted?
The transfer of the case to the Crime Branch is expected to bring a more specialised investigation, with authorities examining CCTV footage, forensic evidence, the suspects' movements and possible links outside Goa.
Until arrests are made and evidence is presented, theories surrounding business rivalry or contract killing remain investigative angles rather than established facts.
Nayak survived the attack without injury, but the brazen nature of the shooting has placed renewed attention on Goa's security environment.
The focus now shifts to the Crime Branch to identify the attackers and uncover who was behind the attempted killing.
