PM Modi Reviews Varanasi Flood Situation, Directs Swift Relief
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reviewed the worsening flood situation in Varanasi, speaking directly with senior local officials as the rising Ganga continues to affect low-lying areas of the city.
On Thursday, September 3, Modi spoke by telephone with Varanasi District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar and Mayor Ashok Tiwari to take stock of the situation and ongoing relief measures.
Ganga Crosses Warning Level
The flood situation has intensified as the Ganga crossed its warning level in Varanasi following continued rainfall and rising river levels.
The Central Water Commission's warning level for the river at Varanasi is 70.26 metres. Reports on September 3 put the water level slightly above that threshold.
Several areas near the river and other low-lying parts of the city have been affected, while boat services have also been suspended as a precaution.
Modi Seeks Detailed Update
During his conversation with officials, the Prime Minister sought information on river water levels, flood-affected areas and arrangements at relief camps.
He directed the administration to maintain constant vigilance and ensure that assistance reaches affected people without delay.
Modi also instructed authorities to conduct relief operations on a war footing and make additional relief material available wherever required.
Focus on Relief Camps
Particular attention has been placed on people who have moved into relief camps.
Officials were asked to ensure the availability of food, drinking water, medicines and other essential facilities. Special consideration was also urged for children, women and elderly residents staying in the camps.
The administration is also working to assist people who remain in flood-affected areas and may be unable or unwilling to leave their homes.
Multiple Areas Affected
The flooding is part of a wider situation across Uttar Pradesh, where several districts have experienced rising river levels.
According to the Relief Commissioner's Office cited by News On AIR, 32 districts of Uttar Pradesh had been affected by floods, with active flood impact reported in 22 districts at the time of the update.
The rising Ganga has also increased concerns in neighbouring areas of eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Authorities Remain on Alert
Local authorities are continuing to monitor the Ganga and Varuna rivers while coordinating rescue and relief operations.
The administration has established relief facilities and is keeping emergency arrangements ready as water levels remain a concern.
For Varanasi, the immediate priority is to protect residents in vulnerable areas, maintain essential supplies and ensure rapid assistance reaches displaced families.
With river levels continuing to be closely watched, officials have been instructed to remain prepared for further changes in the flood situation.
