Pa. Ranjith’s Vettuvam Unveils First Glimpse of Its Dark, Dystopian World
Pa. Ranjith’s long-awaited Vettuvam has finally offered audiences a deeper look at its world, nearly four years after the project was first announced at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022. The new four-minute glimpse, titled “World of Vettuvam,” introduces a visually ambitious universe built around traditional martial arts, power, land and survival.
The film stars Arya, VR Dinesh and Sobhita Dhulipala in key roles, with the story reportedly moving across multiple timelines.
A World Built Around Mallakhamba
One of the most striking elements of the glimpse is its focus on Mallakhamba, the traditional Indian sport involving gymnastics and wrestling techniques performed on a vertical pole or rope.
The footage shows members of the cast undergoing physical preparation and training for the demanding action sequences. Sobhita Dhulipala's character is also shown participating in the training, reflecting the physical nature of the project.
Arya, Dinesh and Sobhita Lead the Story
Vettuvam brings together Pa. Ranjith with Arya following their earlier collaboration on Sarpatta Parambarai.
VR Dinesh, who previously worked with Ranjith in Attakathi, also returns to collaborate with the filmmaker. Sobhita Dhulipala is another major part of the cast and had previously received a character first-look poster from the film.
The new glimpse provides a clearer sense of the scale of the production while still keeping much of the actual storyline under wraps.
From Traditional Sport to a Larger Conflict
Recent reports describe Vettuvam as blending action, science fiction and social themes, with the narrative extending across different eras.
The latest footage suggests that Mallakhamba is not simply being used as a sports backdrop. Instead, the traditional discipline appears to be connected to the film's larger ideas about power, land and survival.
That combination gives the film a different setting from conventional sports dramas, with Ranjith building a broader fictional world around the central conflict.
Sobhita’s Physically Demanding Role
Sobhita Dhulipala has undergone extensive physical preparation for the project.
She has trained in Mallakhamba as well as martial-arts forms including Adi Murai and Surul. The actor previously described the preparation as an intense physical and mental experience.
Her first-look poster, released in May, showed her in a rugged, intense appearance and provided the first major indication of the film's dystopian atmosphere.
A Long-Awaited Ranjith Project
Vettuvam was first announced at Cannes in 2022 and has remained largely under wraps during its development.
It is Pa. Ranjith's eighth feature as a director and follows Thangalaan, which released in 2024.
The latest glimpse therefore represents a significant expansion of the film's promotional campaign, giving audiences their clearest look yet at the scale and visual identity of the project.
Release Details Still Limited
While the makers have now revealed substantially more of Vettuvam, an official theatrical release date has not been announced in the latest reports.
The film is being positioned as a major Tamil-language production with a broader audience in mind, with recent coverage describing it as Ranjith's first project designed for a pan-India audience.
For now, the “World of Vettuvam” glimpse has shifted the film from a long-secret project into one of the more closely watched upcoming Tamil productions, while leaving its central story largely undisclosed.
