Mirzapur: The Movie Hits Theatres as Kaleen Bhaiya Returns to the Big Screen

The wait is over for Mirzapur fans. Mirzapur: The Movie has arrived in cinemas, bringing the violent power struggle of the popular crime franchise to the big screen for the first time.

The film released nationwide on September 4, 2026, in Hindi and Telugu, marking a major theatrical expansion of the Mirzapur universe that previously became one of India's most popular streaming franchises.

Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu and Munna return

The theatrical film brings back several of the franchise's most recognisable characters.

Pankaj Tripathi returns as Kaleen Bhaiya, while Ali Fazal reprises Guddu Pandit and Divyenndu returns as Munna Tripathi. Abhishek Banerjee, Rasika Dugal, Shweta Tripathi, Shriya Pilgaonkar and other familiar faces are also part of the film.

The cast is further expanded with actors including Ravi Kishan and Jitendra Kumar, adding new dynamics to the continuing struggle for control of Mirzapur.

From OTT phenomenon to cinema screens

Mirzapur: The Movie represents the franchise's first major move from streaming into theatrical cinema.

The story explores power, revenge and the battle for the throne of Mirzapur, with the makers presenting an unseen chapter from the franchise's world.

Directed by Gurmmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna, the film is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under Excel Entertainment, with Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani as co-producers.

A long theatrical experience

The film carries an A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification and has a reported runtime of approximately 197 minutes, or around 3 hours and 17 minutes.

That makes it one of the longer Hindi theatrical releases, with the filmmakers giving the story considerable screen time to accommodate its large ensemble and continuing narrative.

Strong opening-day response

Early box-office reporting indicates that the film has made a strong start.

According to The Indian Express, Mirzapur: The Movie earned around ₹30 crore on its opening day, putting it ahead of Awarapan 2's reported opening.

The film has also generated substantial audience discussion, with early reactions ranging from enthusiastic praise for the returning characters and performances to criticism over pacing and story elements.

A new chapter for the franchise

The theatrical release comes after three successful seasons of the original series and gives the franchise an opportunity to reach audiences beyond the traditional streaming format.

For long-time viewers, the return of Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu and Munna is one of the film's biggest attractions. For the filmmakers, the theatrical release represents an attempt to turn an established streaming property into a large-scale cinema experience.

With the film now playing in theatres, its opening weekend performance and audience response will determine whether the Mirzapur universe can establish the same dominance at the box office that it achieved on streaming platforms.
