Manoj Bajpayee to Play Mahatma Gandhi in Sudhir Mishra’s Next Film
Manoj Bajpayee is set to take on one of the most challenging roles of his career, portraying Mahatma Gandhi in an upcoming historical drama directed by Sudhir Mishra.
The project marks the first time Bajpayee will play Gandhi on screen. The film focuses on a lesser-known 21-day period in Gandhi’s life during India’s independence, rather than attempting a conventional cradle-to-grave biopic.
A Different Chapter of Gandhi’s Life
According to Sudhir Mishra, the film explores an important but relatively lesser-known chapter surrounding India's transition to independence.
The story is set during a period when the country was moving towards freedom and political power was increasingly centred in Delhi. Rather than focusing solely on the major political events of the time, the film aims to examine Gandhi’s personal choices and the human side of the leader.
Bajpayee’s Transformation
The first look released in September has generated considerable attention, with Bajpayee appearing dramatically transformed into Gandhi.
He is shown in Gandhi’s familiar white attire, round spectacles and bald appearance, while his body language and mannerisms have also been adapted for the role.
The transformation is particularly notable because Bajpayee is known for immersing himself deeply in complex characters, making his interpretation of one of India's most recognisable historical figures a major point of interest.
Sudhir Mishra Directs
The film is being directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Sudhir Mishra and produced by Anubhav Sinha under Benaras Media Works.
The project also features Saurabh Shukla in a key role, while Divya Dutta is part of the cast as well.
The film has already gone on floors in Lucknow, with outdoor sequences being shot in the city. The working title has been reported as “Gandhi and My Mother,” although the final title has not been confirmed.
A Major Career Challenge for Bajpayee
Playing Gandhi represents a significant departure for Bajpayee, whose career has been built around a wide range of intense and layered characters.
The challenge will not simply be recreating Gandhi's appearance. The performance will require Bajpayee to capture the voice, restraint, physicality and emotional complexity associated with the historical figure while presenting a specific period of his life through Mishra's perspective.
With the first look already attracting attention, the film is emerging as one of the more intriguing historical projects in Hindi cinema.
