Kolkata Political Tension Escalates After Abhishek Banerjee Office Attack
Political tensions in Kolkata have intensified after Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s Camac Street office was allegedly ransacked in the early hours of Thursday, triggering a fresh confrontation between the TMC and BJP.
The incident has become a major political flashpoint in West Bengal, coming only days after another confrontation at the same premises over the removal of an allegedly unauthorised billboard.
Six Arrested in Office Ransacking Case
According to the latest reports, six people from Howrah have been arrested in connection with the office vandalism.
Police said the investigation is continuing to determine the motive and whether the arrested individuals have any political affiliation. At this stage, authorities have not established a political link involving the arrested suspects.
The attack reportedly took place at around 4:30 a.m. at the TMC office on Camac Street. CCTV footage released by Abhishek Banerjee showed masked men inside the premises.
Reports said computers, CCTV equipment, glass panels and other office property were damaged, while some electronic equipment and documents were allegedly taken.
Abhishek Banerjee Accuses BJP
Abhishek Banerjee publicly blamed BJP-linked men for the incident and questioned the response of the police.
He shared CCTV footage of the alleged attack and demanded an investigation into the people behind it. Banerjee also accused the authorities of failing to respond quickly enough after the incident.
The allegations have further intensified an already bitter political contest in Bengal.
However, these allegations remain political claims and have not been established by the police investigation.
BJP Rejects Allegations
The BJP has denied involvement in the incident.
BJP leaders have argued that the party had no role in the vandalism and questioned the circumstances surrounding the attack. Some BJP leaders have even described the episode as potentially staged or linked to internal TMC disputes.
With competing allegations coming from the two political camps, the police investigation will be crucial in establishing who organised the attack and what the motive was.
Incident Comes After Earlier Camac Street Clash
The latest ransacking has added another layer to the controversy surrounding Abhishek Banerjee's Camac Street office.
On August 27, Kolkata Municipal Corporation officials, accompanied by police, attempted to remove billboards that authorities described as unauthorised.
The operation resulted in a confrontation involving TMC leaders and workers. Multiple FIRs were registered and several people were arrested. Abhishek Banerjee was subsequently questioned by Kolkata Police for more than five hours in connection with that case.
The building has therefore become the centre of an escalating legal and political dispute.
Mamata Banerjee Raises Political Alarm
TMC chief Mamata Banerjee has strongly condemned the latest incident and accused the BJP of creating an atmosphere of lawlessness.
She also warned that her party could organise protests in New Delhi if what she described as attacks on TMC leaders and workers continued.
The TMC has sought meetings with President Droupadi Murmu and West Bengal Governor R.N. Ravi, citing concerns over law and order and alleged misuse of police powers.
The developments have consequently moved beyond a local office vandalism case and into a broader political confrontation.
Police Investigation Now Under Focus
Kolkata Police have disputed the claim that officers deliberately delayed responding to the incident.
Police officials said they received information in the morning and reached the location, where six suspects were arrested. Investigators are now examining CCTV footage and other evidence while trying to identify additional people who may have been involved.
The central unanswered question remains whether the attack was politically motivated.
The arrests do not, by themselves, establish BJP involvement or any other political conspiracy. Investigators will need to establish the suspects' backgrounds, communications, movements and possible links before responsibility can be determined.
Bengal Politics Enters Another Flashpoint
The incident comes at a particularly sensitive moment in West Bengal politics, with the BJP and TMC engaged in an intense political battle.
For the TMC, the attack is being presented as evidence of deteriorating law and order and political intimidation. For the BJP, allegations against its workers are being rejected, with the party questioning the circumstances of the incident.
The dispute also comes amid continuing legal and administrative controversy surrounding Abhishek Banerjee's office.
As police investigate the ransacking, the political blame game is likely to continue, but the final responsibility will depend on evidence gathered by investigators rather than competing political claims.
For Kolkata, the immediate concern is whether the latest confrontation remains an isolated criminal investigation or becomes another trigger for wider political mobilisation across West Bengal.
