Kimi Antonelli Wins Italian Grand Prix After Stunning Charge From 19th
Kimi Antonelli produced one of the most remarkable comeback drives in recent Formula 1 history, charging from 19th on the grid to win the 2026 Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
The Mercedes driver overcame an engine-related grid penalty, fierce battles and changing race conditions to take a memorable home victory in front of the Italian crowd.
From P19 to P1
Antonelli started the race near the back after Mercedes made power-unit changes that triggered a grid penalty. Despite the disadvantage, the 20-year-old quickly began moving through the field.
An early red flag following Charles Leclerc's crash gave the field another reset, but Antonelli had already climbed to 12th before the interruption. He continued his charge after the restart, picking off competitors with a combination of pace and controlled overtaking.
The Battle With Russell
The decisive phase came late in the race.
Mercedes teammate George Russell had controlled much of the race from the front, while Antonelli eventually found himself chasing him for the victory.
A Virtual Safety Car created an important strategic opportunity. Antonelli stopped for fresh medium tyres, while Russell remained on older hard tyres.
With the advantage of fresher rubber, Antonelli closed the gap rapidly and launched his final attack in the closing laps. He eventually passed Russell to take the lead and complete the extraordinary P19-to-P1 comeback.
A Historic Home Victory
Antonelli's victory was much more than another Formula 1 win.
He became the first Italian driver to win the Italian Grand Prix at Monza since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966, ending a 60-year wait for a home victory.
It was also Antonelli's seventh victory of the 2026 season, further strengthening his position at the top of the championship.
Russell finished second, while Max Verstappen took third for Red Bull. Lando Norris finished fourth, Oscar Piastri fifth and Lewis Hamilton sixth.
Antonelli Extends Championship Lead
The Monza victory gave Antonelli another major boost in the title race.
He now leads teammate Russell by 66 points, putting the young Italian in a commanding position with the championship entering its next phase.
The result also demonstrated that Antonelli is capable of more than simply winning from the front. Recovering from 19th at one of Formula 1's most historic circuits required speed, patience, strategy and racecraft.
A Moment Italy Will Remember
For the thousands of Italian fans gathered at Monza, Antonelli's victory was a moment of national sporting pride.
Ferrari may have been unable to deliver the home success many tifosi had hoped for, but Antonelli gave Italy its long-awaited Monza winner.
Starting 19th and finishing first, the Mercedes driver's performance will stand as one of the defining moments of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
For Antonelli, it was a dream home victory. For Italian motorsport, it was the end of a 60-year wait.
