Karan Johar Plans Major Radha-Krishna Epic With Sachin Ravi
Filmmaker and producer Karan Johar is set to enter the mythological-devotional space with a major cinematic epic based on Radha and Krishna, according to multiple reports emerging on September 3–4, 2026.
The project is being developed under Dharma Productions and is expected to be mounted on a large theatrical scale. Filmmaker Sachin Ravi, known for Avane Srimannarayana, has reportedly been brought on board as the writer-director.
A New Genre for Dharma
The project represents a significant creative shift for Karan Johar and Dharma Productions, a banner traditionally associated with romance, family dramas and mainstream Hindi entertainers.
Reports describe the Radha-Krishna project as a tentpole divine epic, combining mythology, romance, drama and large-scale visuals. The story is expected to explore Krishna's journey from his birth to the killing of Kansa, while keeping the relationship between Radha and Krishna at its emotional centre.
Sachin Ravi to Direct
Sachin Ravi has reportedly been selected to write and direct the film.
Ravi is best known for directing the Kannada fantasy adventure Avane Srimannarayana, starring Rakshit Shetty. His background in filmmaking and visual storytelling makes the project an interesting departure for both Ravi and Dharma.
The film is reportedly in an advanced stage of development, although production details remain closely guarded.
Casting Still Under Wraps
One of the biggest unanswered questions is who will play Radha and Krishna.
According to the reports, no official casting has been announced yet. Dharma Productions is keeping the principal cast confidential while development continues.
There is also no confirmed theatrical release date at this stage.
A Grand Cinematic Vision
The project is expected to combine the spiritual and emotional dimensions of the Radha-Krishna story with the scale of contemporary Indian cinema.
Reports suggest that the filmmakers want to create a visually ambitious world while retaining the emotional, romantic and dramatic core of the story.
For Dharma Productions, the project could mark a major expansion into mythological storytelling and potentially position the studio for another large-scale pan-India theatrical venture.
Why the Project Matters
The announcement comes at a time when Indian cinema is increasingly exploring mythology, Indian history and cultural narratives on large theatrical canvases.
Karan Johar's involvement adds considerable industry attention, while Sachin Ravi's appointment suggests that the filmmakers are looking beyond a conventional Bollywood treatment for the material.
However, the film remains in development. Casting, budget, release date and other production details are yet to be officially confirmed.
For now, the Radha-Krishna epic stands as one of Dharma Productions' most ambitious upcoming projects and could represent Karan Johar's biggest creative departure yet.
