India U19 Squad Named for Australia Series; Sons of Dravid and Sehwag Included
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the India U19 squads for the upcoming home series against Australia U19, with the selection attracting significant attention because Aaryavir Sehwag and Anvay Dravid have been picked for the one-day matches.
The Australia U19 tour of India will feature three One-Day matches and two Multi-Day fixtures, beginning in September. The series will provide another opportunity for India's next generation of cricketers to gain international experience.
Aaryavir Sehwag Gets Maiden India U19 Call-Up
One of the biggest talking points from the selection is the inclusion of Aaryavir Sehwag, son of former India opener Virender Sehwag.
The right-handed batter has earned his maiden India U19 call-up for the three-match One-Day series against Australia.
Aaryavir has already attracted attention for his aggressive batting style. He made headlines in age-group cricket after scoring a 297-run innings against Meghalaya in the Cooch Behar Trophy, and he has also been involved in domestic cricket in Delhi.
His selection now gives him an opportunity to represent India at the Under-19 level.
Anvay Dravid Also Included
Aaryavir will be joined in the India U19 One-Day squad by Anvay Dravid, the son of former India captain and coach Rahul Dravid.
Anvay, a wicketkeeper-batter, has already represented India U19, having featured in the team's three-match One-Day series against Sri Lanka earlier this year.
The presence of both players has naturally generated interest because their fathers were among the most recognisable figures in Indian cricket.
However, their selection is based on their own performances and development at the junior level, and the Australia series will provide a fresh test of their abilities.
Lakshya Raichandani to Lead the ODI Side
The India U19 One-Day team will be captained by Lakshya Raichandani, with Yashbardhan Chauhan named vice-captain.
The 15-member ODI squad is:
Lakshya Raichandani (C), Yashbardhan Chauhan (VC), Rajat Baghel (WK), Aaryavir Sehwag, V.K. Vineet, Kushagra Ojha, Arjun Rajput, Manal Chauhan, Anvay Dravid (WK), V. Yashveer, Rohit Yadav, Shavin Vinodh, Mohit Ulva, Chigurupati Venkata and Kavya Patel.
The selectors have opted for a mixture of players who have already featured at the junior international level and youngsters looking to establish themselves.
Separate Squad for Multi-Day Matches
The BCCI has also announced a separate 15-member squad for the two Multi-Day fixtures.
Yashbardhan Chauhan will captain the Multi-Day side, with Lakshya Raichandani serving as vice-captain.
The squad includes Sagar Virk, Kushagra Ojha, Manal Chauhan, Kush Patel, Manav Krishna, Abhipray Biswas, Rohit Yadav, Ishan Om, Ayaan Akram, Pranav Ragavendra, Priyanshu Singh, Mohit Ulva and Aryan Yadav.
Notably, Aaryavir Sehwag and Anvay Dravid are part of the One-Day squad but have not been selected for the Multi-Day matches.
Australia U19 Tour Schedule
The three One-Day matches will be played in Rajkot.
1st One-Day — September 18, Rajkot
2nd One-Day — September 21, Rajkot
3rd One-Day — September 23, Rajkot
The two Multi-Day fixtures will follow:
1st Multi-Day — September 27–30, Rajkot
2nd Multi-Day — October 5–8, Ahmedabad
The schedule gives the young players an extended opportunity to experience both limited-overs and longer-format cricket.
A New Generation Under the Spotlight
The inclusion of the sons of two Indian batting legends will inevitably attract attention, but the Australia series is ultimately about the development of the next generation.
For Aaryavir Sehwag, the opportunity is particularly significant because this will be his first India U19 call-up.
For Anvay Dravid, the series represents another chance to build on his earlier junior international experience.
Neither player will be expected to replicate the careers of their famous fathers. Instead, the Australia series offers them a chance to establish their own identities in Indian cricket.
India’s U19 Pathway Gets Another Test
India's junior cricket system has consistently been an important pathway towards senior international cricket.
The Australia series will test the youngsters against a strong Australian age-group side while giving selectors further information ahead of future international tournaments.
With three One-Day games followed by two Multi-Day matches, the tour will also test different aspects of the players' skills.
For Indian cricket fans, however, one storyline will inevitably stand out.
Aaryavir Sehwag and Anvay Dravid will share an India U19 dressing room—continuing the legacy of two famous Indian cricket families, but beginning a journey of their own.
The next chapter starts in Rajkot on September 18
