Haiwaan Set for September Release: Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan Return in Priyadarshan Thriller

Haiwaan Set for September Release as Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan Prepare for Theatrical Clash

Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan are heading back to the big screen together as Haiwaan prepares for its worldwide theatrical release on September 11, 2026.

Directed by Priyadarshan, the upcoming Hindi thriller has emerged as one of September's notable Bollywood releases, with the film promising a darker and more intense screen reunion between the two actors.

Akshay and Saif reunite after 18 years

Haiwaan marks the return of Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan as co-stars after their 2008 film Tashan.

This time, however, the duo are stepping into dramatically different territory. Akshay plays a dangerous psychopath, while Saif portrays a visually impaired martial artist caught in a high-stakes battle against him.

The contrasting characters are at the centre of the film's psychological conflict.

Priyadarshan returns to serious cinema

The film is directed by veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan, who is known for several major Hindi comedies but has also built a career around serious and dramatic storytelling.

With Haiwaan, the filmmaker is returning to a darker cinematic space.

Priyadarshan has also explained that he wanted the adaptation to have its own identity rather than simply reproduce the performances and treatment of the original Malayalam film Oppam. He deliberately prevented his actors from watching the earlier film so they could develop their characters independently.

A thriller built around blindness and danger

The story centres on a blind martial artist protecting a young girl from a psychopath killer, creating a cat-and-mouse confrontation between Saif's character and Akshay's antagonist.

The trailer has already given audiences a glimpse of the film's darker tone, with the two leads positioned on opposite sides of an increasingly dangerous confrontation.

The supporting cast includes Boman Irani, Saiyami Kher and Shriya Pilgaonkar, while Malayalam superstar Mohanlal is expected to make a cameo appearance.

September 11 release confirmed

The makers officially announced September 11, 2026 as the theatrical release date in June.

Current cinema listings continue to show the same date, with Haiwaan scheduled as a Hindi action-crime-thriller release.

With September already delivering several major releases, Haiwaan will enter theatres during a busy period for Hindi cinema.

A different Akshay Kumar

One of the biggest talking points surrounding the film is Akshay Kumar's villainous transformation.

Rather than playing the conventional hero, Kumar takes on the role of a psychopath. The actor has said he drew on conversations with police friends who had encountered psychopaths while preparing for the character, while attempting to keep the performance grounded rather than exaggerated.

That change in image could become one of the film's major attractions when audiences finally see the complete performance.

What audiences can expect

Haiwaan combines psychological suspense, action and crime drama, with Priyadarshan attempting to give the story a fresh interpretation rather than a straightforward recreation of Oppam.

The reunion of Akshay and Saif adds another layer of interest, particularly because their new characters place them in direct conflict rather than the lighter dynamic associated with some of their earlier collaborations.

With the release now just days away, attention will turn to whether the film can translate its trailer buzz and star power into a strong theatrical opening.

Haiwaan arrives worldwide in cinemas on September 11, bringing Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan together again — this time for a much darker battle.
