Haiwaan Creates Buzz as Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan Reunite for a Dark Thriller
Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan are back together on the big screen after 18 years, and their dramatically different roles in Haiwaan are generating strong anticipation ahead of the film’s worldwide theatrical release on September 11, 2026.
Directed by Priyadarshan, the upcoming thriller puts the two stars on opposite sides of a tense psychological conflict. Akshay takes on a dark antagonist role, while Saif plays a visually impaired protagonist caught in a dangerous battle for survival.
Akshay Kumar in a Darker Avatar
One of the biggest talking points surrounding Haiwaan is Akshay Kumar’s character.
Instead of playing the conventional hero, Akshay appears as a menacing and calculating antagonist driven by revenge. The recently released trailer has given audiences a glimpse of the actor in an unusually sinister role.
Priyadarshan has explained that he deliberately wanted to present Akshay differently. The director saw the project as an opportunity to move away from familiar character types and give the actor a role with a much darker personality.
Saif Ali Khan Plays a Visually Impaired Protagonist
Saif Ali Khan plays the central protagonist, a visually impaired man who becomes caught in a dangerous chain of events.
The trailer suggests that his character must depend heavily on his other senses as he confronts the threat surrounding him. Rather than portraying blindness through exaggerated physical mannerisms, Priyadarshan has taken a more restrained approach to the character.
The resulting conflict creates the film’s central cat-and-mouse dynamic.
An 18-Year Reunion
Haiwaan marks the first time Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan have appeared together in a film since Tashan in 2008.
Their reunion after nearly two decades has become one of the film’s biggest attractions, particularly because the new project gives their familiar pairing a completely different dynamic.
This time, the actors are not simply sharing screen space as co-stars. Their characters are positioned on opposing sides of a dangerous confrontation.
Priyadarshan Returns to Thriller Territory
The film is directed by Priyadarshan, who has worked across comedy, drama and thriller genres during his career.
For Haiwaan, the filmmaker has created a darker world built around suspense, psychological tension and a battle between two sharply contrasting characters.
Priyadarshan has also stressed that the film should be treated as a fresh interpretation rather than simply a recreation of his earlier work. Haiwaan is a Hindi adaptation of the Malayalam film Oppam, but the director deliberately kept his actors from watching the original performances so they could develop their characters independently.
The Trailer Raises the Stakes
The trailer introduces a series of disturbing crimes and a growing sense of fear before establishing the confrontation between Saif’s character and Akshay’s antagonist.
The preview has particularly drawn attention to Akshay’s threatening screen presence, while Saif’s character is shown trying to piece together the situation despite his visual impairment.
The supporting cast includes Boman Irani, Saiyami Kher, Shriya Pilgaonkar and Sharib Hashmi, among others.
A Different Akshay-Saif Combination
The biggest strength of Haiwaan could ultimately be the contrast between its two leads.
Audiences already know Akshay and Saif as established Bollywood stars, but the film deliberately moves them into unfamiliar territory. Akshay becomes the threat, while Saif becomes the man forced to confront it.
That reversal gives the reunion an additional layer of curiosity.
Rather than depending only on nostalgia surrounding their previous collaborations, Haiwaan is attempting to build interest around a completely different relationship between the two actors.
September 11 Theatrical Release
Haiwaan is produced by KVN Productions and Thespian Films, with Venkat K. Narayana and Shailaja Desai Fenn backing the project.
The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on September 11, 2026.
With the trailer already establishing its dark tone and the Akshay-Saif reunion providing a major promotional hook, the film is now heading into its final stretch before release.
For Bollywood audiences, the biggest question is whether Priyadarshan’s darker thriller, Akshay’s villainous turn and Saif’s unconventional protagonist can combine to deliver a compelling theatrical experience.
