Frances Tiafoe Stuns Daniil Medvedev to Reach US Open 2026 Quarterfinals
Frances Tiafoe produced one of his biggest performances of the 2026 US Open, defeating seventh-seeded Daniil Medvedev in straight sets to book his place in the quarterfinals.
The American No. 11 seed won 7-6(1), 6-4, 7-6(6) at Louis Armstrong Stadium, ending Medvedev's campaign and giving the home crowd another major reason to believe in an American men's title run.
Tiafoe turns the rivalry around
The victory was particularly significant because Medvedev had dominated their previous meetings. Before this match, the Russian had won six of their seven previous encounters.
Tiafoe, however, found a way to disrupt Medvedev's rhythm with aggressive tennis, frequent movement toward the net and timely shot-making under pressure.
The opening set proved crucial. Medvedev appeared on course to take control after moving ahead, but Tiafoe broke him when he served for the set at 6-5 and forced a tiebreak.
Once there, Tiafoe was almost flawless, winning the tiebreak 7-1 and taking a major psychological advantage.
Tiafoe keeps his composure
The second set remained tightly contested, but Tiafoe found the decisive breakthrough with a forehand down the line before holding his advantage to take the set 6-4.
Medvedev refused to go away in the third, producing another tense battle that eventually went to a tiebreak.
With the match on the line, Tiafoe again produced his best tennis. A crucial exchange at the net helped him gain the advantage before he closed out the tiebreak 8-6, completing a straight-sets victory.
“The people’s court”
The atmosphere at Louis Armstrong Stadium played an important role in Tiafoe's performance.
The American has now won all 10 of his US Open matches played on the court, strengthening his reputation as one of the tournament's biggest crowd favorites.
After the victory, Tiafoe described the venue simply as “the people’s court.”
Quarterfinal against Alex Michelsen
Tiafoe's reward for eliminating Medvedev was a quarterfinal meeting with fellow American Alex Michelsen, who defeated Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the fourth round.
The matchup gave American tennis another major storyline at Flushing Meadows, with multiple U.S. players still alive in the men's draw.
Tiafoe entered the quarterfinal looking to make another deep run at his home Grand Slam and keep alive American hopes of ending a long wait for a men's singles champion in New York.
A statement victory in New York
Medvedev entered the tournament as the 2021 US Open champion, but Tiafoe's combination of aggression, net play and composure in the biggest moments proved decisive.
For Tiafoe, the victory was more than another step toward the title. It was a statement that his best tennis can still trouble the world's elite on the biggest stage.
