Delhi Satya Niketan Building Collapse: 7 Dead, Owner and Four Others Arrested
A five-storey paying guest building in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area collapsed on September 6, killing seven people, including five students, and injuring others. The tragedy has triggered a criminal investigation, scrutiny of construction practices and a wider crackdown on unsafe and unauthorised buildings across the capital.
Building Owner Arrested in Rajasthan
Delhi Police arrested the building’s owner, Hariram Bansal, from Bhiwadi in Rajasthan after teams were formed to locate him following the collapse.
Police registered a case involving allegations including culpable homicide, negligent conduct relating to construction or repair of buildings and endangering public safety.
The nearly 50-year-old building was being used as a PG accommodation for students. Investigators are examining allegations that unauthorised construction and structural changes contributed to the disaster.
Five Arrests So Far
The investigation has expanded beyond the property owner.
By September 9, Delhi Police had made five arrests in connection with the case. Those arrested include the building owner, his son Mahesh Gupta, his wife, a labour contractor and PG operator Sudhanshu.
Police say Sudhanshu was one of two business partners who had taken the property on lease in August 2025 and operated it as a PG. The other operator, Shubham Tyagi, remained absconding according to reports.
Questions Over Illegal Construction
The collapse has raised serious questions about how an ageing residential structure was converted into a high-density student accommodation.
Investigators are examining claims that additional floors and structural modifications were carried out despite concerns about the building's condition. Police are also looking into maintenance responsibilities and construction work allegedly carried out at the property.
The exact technical cause of the collapse will ultimately depend on the ongoing investigation and structural assessment.
MCD Faces Scrutiny
The tragedy has also placed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) under scrutiny.
Five MCD officials were suspended following the incident, while questions were raised about regulatory oversight of construction and PG accommodations. The Delhi High Court has also sought responses from authorities regarding building safety and the regulation of PGs and hostels.
Delhi Launches Wider Crackdown
Following the Satya Niketan tragedy, authorities have expanded inspections and enforcement against unsafe and unauthorised structures.
The MCD said that 58 buildings had been demolished and action had been ordered against another 31 properties as part of the wider drive. On Wednesday alone, officials carried out 34 demolitions and sealed 17 properties.
The enforcement campaign is now extending across Delhi's 12 municipal zones, focusing on buildings considered dangerous or in violation of construction rules.
A Tragedy That Has Put Student Housing Under the Spotlight
The deaths have intensified concerns about the safety of students living in privately operated PGs and hostels, particularly in areas around Delhi University where demand for affordable accommodation is high.
The Delhi High Court has taken note of the wider housing issue, including the shortage of hostel facilities for students. A PIL seeking stronger hostel infrastructure and safety measures is now being considered by the court.
The Satya Niketan collapse has therefore become more than an investigation into one building. It has raised broader questions about illegal construction, ageing structures, PG regulation, municipal enforcement and student safety in Delhi.
