Satwik-Chirag Exit World Championships After Quarterfinal Defeat
India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have been knocked out of the 2026 BWF World Championships after losing their men’s doubles quarterfinal to China’s Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang.
The fifth-seeded Indian pair went down 18-21, 9-21 in New Delhi, ending their hopes of winning a third World Championships medal.

Satwik and Chirag made a strong start in the opening game and were leading 18-16 at one stage.
However, the Chinese pair responded with a crucial run of points and eventually took the game 21-18.

The second game proved much more difficult for the Indian duo.
Liang and Wang controlled the rallies, defended effectively and dominated the front court to build a commanding lead.
They closed out the game 21-9, completing a straight-game victory in just 36 minutes.

The defeat means Satwik and Chirag will leave the tournament without a medal.
The pair had previously won bronze medals at the 2022 and 2025 World Championships, making this quarterfinal exit a disappointment for one of India’s leading doubles combinations.

Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand remain in the tournament and have already secured a medal after defeating China’s Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian in the women’s doubles quarterfinal.
Their achievement ensures India will return home with at least one medal from the championships.
