India’s No. 3 Problem May Finally Be Solved as Devdutt Padikkal Makes a Strong Case
India’s long-running search for a reliable No. 3 batter may finally be reaching a solution.
Devdutt Padikkal has produced a remarkable response to the opportunity handed to him in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, scoring a magnificent 167 and playing a major role in India’s 165-run victory.
The performance came at a crucial moment for Indian Test cricket. Since Cheteshwar Pujara’s departure from the position in 2023, India have tried a number of players at No. 3 without finding someone who could permanently establish himself in the role.
Padikkal was given the opportunity after Sai Sudharsan was ruled out of the Sri Lanka series with injury.
Instead of simply filling a vacancy, he has created a serious selection argument.

No. 3 has been one of India's most difficult batting positions to settle since Pujara's exit.
The position requires a batter capable of walking in early when an opener falls, absorbing pressure, handling the new ball and building long partnerships.
India have experimented with several combinations, but consistency has remained a problem.
The absence of a permanent No. 3 has become particularly noticeable in Test cricket because the position often determines the direction of the innings after the opening pair separates.

Padikkal entered the Sri Lanka series with a clear opportunity.
Sai Sudharsan was unavailable because of injury, opening the door for the left-hander to bat at No. 3.
The opportunity came after Padikkal had already impressed during the team's preparation for the Test series.
He was selected ahead of several other options and immediately showed why the management had confidence in him.

Padikkal's first major statement came on the opening day.
He reached his maiden Test century and finished the first day unbeaten on 131.
But he did not stop there.
On the second day, despite Sri Lanka's spinners finding greater assistance from the surface, Padikkal continued to bat with patience and control.
He eventually fell for a superb 167 off 230 balls, including 15 fours and a six.

What made the innings especially important was not simply the number of runs.
Padikkal had to deal with pressure at the start of his innings, changing conditions and a strong Sri Lankan spin attack.
He showed the ability to defend when necessary and attack when scoring opportunities appeared.
That balance is exactly what India need from a Test No. 3.
His innings also continued even as wickets fell around him on the second day.
Sri Lanka's spinners fought back strongly and India lost several wickets, but Padikkal remained composed long enough to take his score beyond 150.

Padikkal's 167 placed him in an elite group of Indian batters who have scored more than 150 at No. 3 against Sri Lanka.
He joined Rahul Dravid and Cheteshwar Pujara on that list.
The achievement underlined the quality of his performance and made the innings even more significant in the context of India's history in Sri Lanka.
For a player trying to establish himself in the Test team, producing such a score away from home is a major statement.

The biggest consequence of Padikkal's performance is the selection debate it creates.
India still have Sai Sudharsan, who was originally expected to play an important role in the Test side.
Sudharsan's injury created the opportunity for Padikkal, but Padikkal's response has made the competition much more interesting.
The Indian team management has made it clear that both players remain important for the future.
That means Padikkal's success does not automatically mean Sudharsan has lost his place.
However, Padikkal has now given the selectors a very strong reason to consider keeping him in the XI.

Padikkal's performance has also received praise from senior members of the Indian team.
KL Rahul highlighted the batter's long-term work and preparation behind the scenes.
The 167 was not viewed as a sudden breakthrough without foundation.
Padikkal had been working towards establishing himself in red-ball cricket and had spoken about his desire to become a permanent member of India's Test side.
The opportunity in Galle allowed him to demonstrate that ambition at the highest level.

Despite the excitement surrounding Padikkal's 167, India cannot declare the No. 3 problem solved after a single Test.
Test cricket demands consistency over a long period.
The next challenge for Padikkal will be converting this breakthrough into a sustained run of performances.
He followed his first-innings 167 with a useful 44 in the second innings of the Galle Test, another positive sign that his confidence was not limited to one innings.

India are building a new generation of Test players under captain Shubman Gill.
The current side includes several young and developing batters, while experienced players such as KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja continue to provide stability.
Padikkal's emergence at No. 3 could fit perfectly into that transition.
If he can establish himself, India would have a naturally left-handed batter capable of occupying a critical position for years.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆
The Galle performance has answered one question: Padikkal has the ability to score heavily at Test level.
The next question is whether he can do it repeatedly.
India will want to see how he performs against different attacks, different conditions and different match situations.
A successful Test career is built on repeated performances rather than one spectacular score.
For now, however, Padikkal has done everything that could have been asked of him.
𝗔 𝗠𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁𝘀
When Sai Sudharsan returns to full fitness, India could face a genuine selection dilemma.
Sudharsan was already considered an important part of India's plans, while Padikkal has now produced a Player of the Match-winning performance in Sri Lanka.
Rather than being a problem, the competition could become a major strength for India's Test batting.
Two young left-handers competing for opportunities would give the management greater flexibility.
𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗺
For several years, India's No. 3 position has lacked stability.
Padikkal has now produced exactly the kind of innings that selectors hope to see from a long-term candidate.

A maiden Test century followed by a 167, strong performances against spin and another useful contribution in the second innings have given his case considerable weight.
𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁
India may not officially have declared their No. 3 problem solved, but Devdutt Padikkal has come closer than anyone in recent years to providing the answer.
His 167 in Galle was technically strong, mentally disciplined and produced under pressure.
More importantly, it came in the exact role where India have struggled to find consistency since Pujara's departure.
Sai Sudharsan remains an important part of India's future plans, but Padikkal has now created a genuine selection battle.
If he continues producing performances like this, India's long search for a dependable No. 3 may finally be coming to an end.
