Dhamaal Rights Dispute Escalates as Makers Face ₹1.5 Crore Fraud Case
The legal controversy surrounding the popular Bollywood comedy Dhamaal has intensified after Mumbai Police registered a case against filmmaker Indra Kumar and producer Ashok Thakeria over an alleged ₹1.50 crore rights-related fraud.
The complaint was filed by Vikas Baldevraj Sahni, owner of Mumbai-based film distribution company Grand Master. He has alleged that his company paid ₹1.50 crore for the worldwide distribution, digital and copyright rights of Dhamaal.
The allegations are being investigated by Mumbai Police, and the claims have not been established in court.

According to the complaint, Grand Master entered into an agreement with Maruti International on October 15, 2019.
The distributor claims it was assured that the rights being purchased had not previously been transferred to another company.
Sahni alleges that he later discovered that certain digital and OTT rights of the 2007 film had already been sold to Shemaroo Entertainment.

Grand Master claims it paid ₹1.50 crore under the 2019 agreement for the rights.
The distributor has alleged that the earlier transfer of rights created a conflict over its ability to commercially exploit the film.
The police case was registered on August 17, 2026, under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗼 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗔𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗜𝗻 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀
A central issue in the dispute is an alleged earlier agreement involving Shemaroo Entertainment.
The complainant claims the lifetime OTT and digital rights had already been transferred to Shemaroo in 2015, several years before the Grand Master agreement.
This alleged timeline is now an important part of the rights dispute being examined by investigators.
𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗶 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘀
Following the emergence of the case, Maruti International issued a statement addressing the controversy.
The production house said it was in discussions with the concerned party and that the matter regarding the rights would be resolved mutually after further discussions.
The statement suggests that discussions are continuing while the dispute remains unresolved.
𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗮𝘆
Mumbai's Amboli Police have begun investigating the allegations.
Investigators are expected to examine agreements, payment records, copyright documents and the history of the film's distribution and digital rights.
The investigation will determine whether the allegations made in the complaint are supported by documentary evidence.
𝗗𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘆
The dispute highlights the complicated nature of film-rights ownership.
Older films can have separate theatrical, television, satellite, digital, OTT, remake and copyright arrangements, sometimes involving different companies over different periods.
Any conflict between these agreements can create major commercial and legal complications.
𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘆𝘄𝗼𝗼𝗱
The case has attracted attention because Dhamaal remains a valuable Bollywood comedy franchise.
The original 2007 film developed a strong audience following and eventually led to sequels, including Dhamaal 4.
The latest dispute shows how the commercial value of successful older films can continue long after their theatrical release.
𝗗𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗮𝗹 𝟰 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
The rights controversy surrounding the original Dhamaal has emerged at a time when the franchise has returned to theatres with Dhamaal 4.
The fourth film was produced by a group including Maruti International and other production partners and features Ajay Devgn, Riteish Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi and Jaaved Jaaferi among its cast.
The current police case concerns the rights of the 2007 film and should not automatically be treated as a dispute over Dhamaal 4 itself.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁
The immediate focus will be on the police investigation and the documents connected with the disputed rights transactions.
At the same time, Maruti International has indicated that discussions with the concerned party are continuing.
Whether the dispute is resolved through a settlement or proceeds through further legal action will depend on the findings and the positions taken by the parties involved.
𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁
The Dhamaal rights controversy has escalated into a formal police case involving an alleged ₹1.50 crore financial dispute.
The complainant alleges that rights sold to Grand Master in 2019 had already been transferred elsewhere, while the filmmakers' production house says discussions are underway to resolve the matter.
**The allegations remain under investigation, and no final finding of fraud has been established at this stage.**
The case could become an important example of the legal and commercial complications surrounding ownership and licensing of legacy Bollywood films.
