The Central Government is examining the possibility of introducing ethanol as an alternative household cooking fuel, a move that could reshape India's clean energy landscape while reducing dependence on conventional LPG cylinders.
Officials are studying the feasibility of ethanol-based cooking solutions as part of the country's broader push towards renewable energy and lower carbon emissions. If implemented, the initiative could provide households with another clean fuel option alongside LPG and electric cooking systems.
Ethanol is already widely used in India's fuel blending programmed for vehicles. Expanding its use to household kitchens would require dedicated cooking appliances, safety standards, storage systems and a reliable supply chain before it can be rolled out on a large scale.
Experts believe ethanol has the potential to reduce fossil fuel consumption and strengthen India's energy security by increasing the use of domestically produced biofuels. It may also create new opportunities for the agricultural sector, as ethanol is produced from crops such as sugarcane and maize.
However, several challenges remain. The government will need to address issues related to affordability, consumer safety, infrastructure development and public awareness before any nationwide adoption can take place.
At present, the proposal remains under consideration, and no nationwide rollout has been announced. Further studies and pilot projects are expected before a final decision is taken.
If approved, ethanol-based cooking fuel could become another step in India's transition towards cleaner, more sustainable household energy while offering consumers greater choice in the future.
