Four Indian Seafarers Killed in Attack on Cargo Ship Near Ukraine's Odesa Port

ODESA, UKRAINE | July 21, 2026

Four Indian seafarers lost their lives after a commercial cargo vessel was attacked shortly after leaving Ukraine's Odesa port, in one of the deadliest incidents involving Indian civilian sailors since the Russia-Ukraine war began.

The vessel, MV Golden Leo, was travelling through the Black Sea when it was struck, causing heavy damage and multiple casualties among its multinational crew. Five Indian nationals were serving on board at the time of the attack. While four died in the incident, another Indian crew member sustained critical injuries and is undergoing treatment.

The tragedy has sparked concern in India, where thousands of merchant navy professionals work on international cargo vessels operating across some of the world's busiest and most challenging sea routes.

Attack Raises Fresh Concerns Over Civilian Shipping:

Although commercial vessels continue to operate through designated maritime corridors in the Black Sea, the region remains vulnerable because of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Merchant ships transport essential commodities including grain, industrial goods and humanitarian supplies. However, civilian crews often face significant risks while navigating waters affected by military operations.

The latest attack once again highlights the dangers faced by seafarers who continue working despite the security challenges.

India Responds:

Following confirmation of the deaths, the Ministry of External Affairs expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured all possible assistance to the injured crew member and affected relatives.

India also conveyed its serious concern through diplomatic channels, stressing that attacks affecting civilian merchant vessels endanger innocent lives and disrupt international maritime trade.

Officials are coordinating with Ukrainian authorities, the shipping company and Indian diplomatic missions to facilitate assistance and necessary formalities.

Merchant Navy Community in Shock:

India is among the world's leading suppliers of skilled merchant navy professionals, with thousands serving on international ships across global trade routes.

The deaths of four Indian crew members have deeply affected the maritime community, where safety remains a growing concern as commercial ships continue operating in conflict-prone waters.

Industry observers believe the incident could lead to renewed discussions on strengthening protection measures for civilian vessels sailing through high-risk regions.

Repatriation and Investigation:

Efforts are underway to complete identification procedures and arrange the return of the deceased crew members to India.

Meanwhile, authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack. Shipping officials are also assessing the damage to the vessel while monitoring the condition of the injured sailor.

Why This Matters:

The tragedy serves as a reminder that armed conflicts can have far-reaching consequences beyond the battlefield. Civilian workers, including merchant navy professionals, continue to face serious risks while ensuring the uninterrupted movement of global trade.

For India, the incident is not only a humanitarian loss but also an important reminder of the challenges faced by thousands of Indian seafarers working far from home under difficult conditions.
